Vanilla Ink meets Brazen Studios

January 25, 2010

Today I visited Brazen Studios in Glasgow. It was inspiring to say the least.

Brazen is many things under one big umbrella. It is a creative environment for up to ten jewellers to design and make. It is a learning environment for people wishing to make jewellery. It is a retail space, where it sells the most beautiful jewellery for mostly British makers. It’s open plan layout invites the customer to become part of the process ; sneaky peaks into the workshop allowing you to see just how these things are made. A welcoming creative environment for any buyer.
I spoke to Sarah, the founder of Brazen, to hear her story.
And yes now I am scared and excited all at once. This business set up is not going to be easy. Not that I thought for one second that it would be but Sarah has really brought it home for me.

“Don’t be naive about cost….whatever you think it might cost, double it. It’s always going to cost more”

Sarah had similar feelings to me after graduating from a jewellery course. She could design and make a ring but didn’t have a clue about setting up a business. She had to learn so much about being a business woman and she is still learning.
So here is what I took away with me:
  • Find enough money for you to feel comfortable about setting up the business
  • Look for initiative within your city that can give you business advice: Business Gateway, Cultural Enterprise office, Councils.
  • Know when to ask for help
  • Know when to pay for help
  • Be realistic
  • Don’t stand on anybody’s toes
So lets crack on!!
Anymore hints and tips for entering the business world ? Send them my way.
